CE Objectives

At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Assess the cognitive vulnerability factors that alert the clinician to the client's risk for suicide.
  2. Utilize risk management methods that represent the standard of care in the treatment of suicidal clients.
  3. Apply specific cognitive-behavioral techniques and homework assignments in the treatment of suicidal clients, in the context of a collaborative therapeutic relationship and an accurate cognitive-behavioral case conceptualization.
About Dr. Newman

Cory F. Newman, Ph.D., ABPP is Director of the Center for Cognitive Therapy, Professor of Psychology, in Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and Adjunct Faculty at the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy. Dr. Newman is a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology, and a Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. Dr. Newman has served as a protocol therapist and supervisor in a number of large-scale psychotherapy outcome studies, including the Penn-Vanderbilt-Rush Treatment of Depression Projects. Dr. Newman is an international lecturer, having presented scores of cognitive therapy workshops and seminars across North America, as well as fifteen countries in Europe, South America, and Asia. Dr. Newman is the lead author on dozens of articles and chapters on cognitive therapy for a wide range of disorders, and has authored or co-authored five books, including Choosing to Live: How to Defeat Suicide Through Cognitive Therapy, and Core Competencies in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy: Becoming an Effective and Competent Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist.

Target Audience
This presentation is intended for mental health professionals, researchers, and graduate students. The instructional level of this presentation is introductory.
