Social Anxiety Disorder: The Role of Emotion (Dys)Regulation in Its Nature and Treatment - Richard G Heimberg, PhD

After a description of the nature of social anxiety disorder, Dr. Heimberg will examine the suppression of emotional expression in social anxiety and the relationship of expressive suppression, cognitive reappraisal, and beliefs about emotions to the outcome of cognitive-behavioral therapy for social anxiety disorder. Self-report, weekly monitoring, interview, and fMRI data will be presented. This presentation should be appropriate for all members of PBTA, regardless of level of training and of prior exposure to the literature on social anxiety disorder.

CE Objectives

At the completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Define social anxiety disorder and describe its prevalence and associated patterns of comorbidity and impairment
  2. Describe patterns of emotion dysregulation (cognitive reappraisal, expressive suppression, entity theory of emotion) demonstrated by individuals with social anxiety disorder
  3. Describe the potential mediating role of emotion (dys)regulation on the outcomes of cognitive-behavioral treatment for social anxiety disorder
